Last Nov while visiting family in Israel I was able to make a brief visit to the up and coming wine region known as the Judean Hills.  As many of you probably know the Israeli wine and food scene has been exploding internationally in recent years (who hasn’t heard of Yotam Ottolenghi!).  A short drive outside the historical city of Jerusalem you find yourself weaving through beautiful rolling hills covered mostly in pine forests and scattered with dense villages.   The…

Saturday Sips: Savoie – A taste of the French alps

July 7 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This Saturday we're opening two wines from Savoie, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in eastern France; neighbors Switzerland (to the East) and the Jura region (to the North). Jacquere is the region’s most widely planted white grape variety. The style tends to be dry, racy and with low alcohol.  Flavors range from floral, white fruits and grapefruit to mineral and flinty. The Savoie's native  Mondeuse is referred as “the grape variety that ripens amidst the snow”; produces deep purple-colored wines with well-structured acidity and well-integrated…

Domaine Gitton was established by Marcel Gitton at the end of World War II. Starting out with just half a hectare, today the domaine owns 27 hectares throughout the region, with his son Pascal at its helm. Their vineyards Les Herses and Silex, are known for their high concentration of flint, locally called Silex, which forms the name of their eponymous vineyard. Fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, the wines are then aged for ten months in neutral…

“Lalou Bize-Leroy stands virtually alone at the top of Burgundy's quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionist, and because she has had the courage to produce wines from low yields and bottle them naturally...". Robert Parker could not have said it better, and this continues to be why Madame Leroy is still considered the Queen of Burgundy today. Her extraordinary wines shine all the way from the entry level Bourgognes through to her Grand Crus, and even her Maison wines…
