Pour a glass and grab a comic

At a tasting dinner a little while back I was sitting next to this really nice couple and we started to talk about Hong Kong and the culture of wine here.  We flipped phones and shared apps, talked about Jeannie Cho Lee’s book (we were at her book launch afterall) and then he said:

“Hey, have you read the Japanese wine comics?  Les Gouttes de Dieu – its where I’ve actually re-learnt all my wine information recently and its gotten me really into it again”

Now, that’s something I had to get my hands on.  Who doesn’t love comics?  The Japanese manga series Les Gouttes de Dieu (which translates to Drops of Gold) started conceptually in 2004 while the two authors Yuko and Shin Kibayashi – brother and sister were working for on another comic.  Fueling their work sessions with wine, they found themselves considering theirs wines more than the immediate comic at hand.  In November of that year, they started publishing their combined passions in  Tokyo’s Weekly Magazine.  Its said that wine sellers in Tokyo started following the comic’s ups and downs as an indicator on how to stock their inventory.  Move over Robert Parker.

The  manga series is published in Korea, Taiwan and China and in 2008 it was published in France.    American publisher Vertical Inc. will publish the series under the title “The Drops of God”, with the first volume scheduled for a September 2011 release! At a tasting dinner a little while back I was sitting next to this really nice couple and we started to talk about Hong Kong and the culture of wine here.  We flipped phones and shared apps, talked about Jeannie Cho Lee’s book (we were at her book launch afterall) and then he said:
